More Sexism At NBC
The victims this time were Rachel Maddow AND Hillary Clinton. The context was Obama's "inartful" use of the word "refine" regarding his Iraq policy. TChris covered that controversy. Maddow was arguing the Obama argument and Joe Scarborough was not happy about Maddow's laughing as a reaction to Joe's commentary. The result was yet another episode of sexism at NBC:
Yet more guffaws from Maddow.
MADDOW: You're so wrong, I can't even hold it together. You're so wrong.
SCARBOROUGH: You might support Obama but you've got the Clinton cackle down, Rachel. I'm proud of ya.
(Emphasis supplied.) Maddow has been silent and cowardly on the issue of sexism and misogyny at NBC and in general, so you might be tempted to feel some schadenfreude. Resist it. Sexism is wrong whenever it occurs and whomever it is directed at. NBC should suspend Scarborough for this blatant bout of sexism.

OK it's a slow news day
I get that. Holidays can be a problem. No question Scarborough is an ass. No argument that, with no chance at winning the argument on the merits, he deflected and dodged the subject. But sexism? NO. Mr Burns laugh on The Simpsons is a cackle, How does that become sexist. Just because a comment is demeaning does not make it sexist. Let's save the outrage for cases that are clearly sexist. The right wing will give us plenty of opportunity. Crying about it here just weakens our argument when it is real.

You could argue that the cackle comment is sexism, but it's been plainly clear to me for some time now that Scarborough doesn't like Rachel because she's a liberal on Air America and that her being a woman has very little to do with it. Personally, I'm more bothered by the fact that he never bothers to listen to the substance of any of her arguments and automatically disagrees with them because they're coming from her. I can believe that sexist comments get lumped in with his criticisms of her positions, but it doesn't start there. It starts with his complete intolerance of talking with someone who believes something different than he does. I saw him do the same thing on Real Time with Bill Maher when he was talking to Matt Taibbi. On some issues he can be completely rational, but there a handful where he loses all inability to do so and just lashes out in whatever area he thinks is most vulnerable because he's unable to refute the facts that oppose his shaky positions on those issues.
It's an anti-liberal bias, not an anti-female bias.

By leftysrsickJuly 4, 2008 - 4:21pmIf you want to know if something’s sexist,
simply use the expression in reference to the other gender. Do men "cackle"? Nope, it’s definitely a slur against women. The word specifically derides strong women by referencing evil witches, which is a tactic that has been historically used to suppress, intimidate and subjugate women.
Here’s why this particular expression is so bad:
The "Hillary cackle" is an actual video that is mailed around and posted on right wing websites. It is composed of clips of very fake sounding laughs from Hillary pasted together to make her look silly or weird and certainly not presidential or strong. It's a disgusting right wing tool that is meant to be demeaning and cruel. Links to the “Hillary Cackle” video were mailed to Republicans and right wingers with Limbaugh Operation Chaos encouragement vote for Hillary to try to extend and undermine our Democratic primary.
Now that Joe Scarborough has stooped to using this right wing tool against another strong woman, Rachel Maddow, he’s participated in the normalization and mainstreaming of that expression.
It's bad enough for an MSNBC host to engage in sexist and misogynist behavior, but for Scarborough to it as a mechanism for dismissing women on the air lends legitimacy to a right wing GOP tool. Worse, the segment with Maddow didn't even involve Clinton herself, which now makes it an acceptable put down for of any woman he disagrees with. Scarborough stooped to this attack because Maddow stood up for Barack Obama against Scarborough and the other talking heads.
If you think Joe Scarborough shouldn’t attack guests with sexist right wing tactics just because they disagree and support Obama, contact MSNBC:
