Today's TRMS

By Vanessa Silverton-Peel

The Rachel Maddow Show has its tissues ready; we're execting a tear-jerker of a speech from Obama tonight. Not only is today the anniversary of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech but it is also the first time in almost 50 years that a candidate has given his acceptance speech in a venue like Mile High Stadium.

And on the other end of the excitement spectrum there is the John McCain campaign! The campaign is confirming that a running mate has been selected and supposedly it's down to Mittens Romeny, Tim "Nice Hair" Pawlenty and Tom "Bulldog Face" Ridge. So tonight Rachel will be talking to Minneapolis mayor R.T. Rybak about Pawlenty, the governor of Minnesota, about their contentious relatonship and whether or not Pawlenty is a good choice for McCain. Oh, and we might even ask him for some bar recommendations for when we are in St. Paul next week.

new sticker!

Not sure if Rachel can use this, but I am thinking of having bumper stickers made:

2 BUSHed 4 McCain

Thanks for all you do.

2BUSHed 4 McCain

I like it...nice work

Speech tonight

I heard that part of Obama's speech will be read from two tablets with messages directly from God (or from Obama's own mind if you are athiest). I also heard that the concessions stands at the stadium ran out of diet pepsi last night but Jane Fonda said something to him and now the tanks are full again. Apparently some of the toilets had ecoli virus on the seats but after Obama used them they are sterile.

I might miss the live speech tonight but will read it when it is codified in the Second New Testament.

Love,
HR

Must be terrible to be a Repug these days, huh, HR?

However, I'm glad that you realize that Obama is inspired by a Higher Power unlike your candidate who can only mutter meaningless phrases such as "I'm saved and I'm forgiven" on what it means to be a Christian.

Nope

It's always a good day to be a Republican. I bet 75% of your fellow lefties would disagree with your statement that Obama is inspired by a god. How dare you attribute Obama's success to such fables!

Love,
HR

It's hard being a Republican

It's hard being a Republican when the money runs out.

Oh my goodness...

LOL, oh come on now! Almost every Repub I have spoken to or have seen on da tube admits how difficult it currently is to be a GOPer. Heck, there are tons of Governors, Senators, Reps and just plain GOP hacks that have mentioned this over and over, so for YOU to take such a different tact is just plain silly.

Silly I say!

Just look at MY street

So... the wifey and I were the first ones to get an Obama sign.... the second ones, are our Republican neighbors, and the last one to get one is my extremely liberal, raging granny, Unitarian Universalist neighbor.... The Republicans got the lawn sign before SHE did??????

LOL,

Well, at least the Liberals finally caught up with the Republicans! (how about that for an oxymoron).

Are you that gullible?

Your spew on Obama may be justified, and yes, he as well as the Democratic Party is part of the corporate enslavement and I'll go over the edge to say that Obama also spoke at the Council on Foreign Relations, the Trilateral Commission and you know he was essentially a nobody coming out of no where to be the nominee for the corporate DNC. I agree that a better candidate for the DNC would have been Dennis Kucinich, BUT, John McCain is ALSO a member of the CFR, Tri-lats and he too is the puppet to the corporatacracy. He too has an allegiance to a god but not the Bible god who he claims to support. How do I know?

01) He denied vets benefits

02) He supports the trans-corridor project where a super highway from Mexico, through the mid-west to Canada can bring junk in from China

03) He supports the Security and Prosperity Partnership Of North America

04) He supported the Patriot Act 1 and 2

05) He supports relaxed immigration laws

06) He supported wiretapping

07) RFID tagging of humans

Need I continue? And what our my sources? A.P., Reuters, McKlatchey, Washington Times (you know, the only paper the President reads), CNN.com, fox.com, ABC.com, NBC.com. CBS.com As well as conservative sources like:

Alex Jones, Jim Marrs, Pat Buchanan, Steven Quayle, Joyce Riley, Katherine Albrecht...and many many more.

So H.A. before you support a candidate, look to see where they come from? Me I'm voting Green.

broadcast quality

I find this annoying tv on the radio bad enough, but what is that guy screaming in the background? It is hard to hear the punditry punditing.

I know.....

It happened in my area..... sniff... I almost wore a black band around my arm to express my deep mourning over the fact. :(

cool_princessie re: Rachel viewing party

Are you working on getting a group together to watch Rachel's first show? If so, I'd love to be there. I live in Campbell and would prefer a location close to either CalTrain or the light rail. Let me know! :<)

Good place would be Palo Alto

half way between SF and San Hose, the Caltrain stops there (three trains after the show is over, north and south) and there are several good bars/restaurants within easy walk that we could take over. There are several sports bars with massive TeeVees, but there are many other (probably better) possibles.

Seeing the positive crowd reaction to Rachel during MSNBC's convention coverage I don't think there would be a big problem getting at least one screen tuned in!

Palo Alto is an AWESOME idea.

Do you have any recommendations? If so, please let me know. I would like to go there ahead of time to see what kind of "cable" they have. I say this because I have Dish, and I get the East Coast feed, so the show is going to be at 6 PM for me. But I think that Direct TV and Comcast air stuff on the same time schedule as the east coast, right? In that case the show would start at 9 pm.

Also, in addition to the trains, one can take the 22 line ( or 522 to go faster), which also stops at the PA train Station.

Another place I thought of would be Mountain View because in addition to the train, it has light rail service as well. Does anyone prefer one city over the other? I would rather give preference to people taking public transportation if that's fine to y'all.

Peace out!

CP, I can drive anywhere

so giving preference to those taking public transit is a good idea. Listen, if you need help doing this, I would be more than happy to help out if need be.

Let me know, you how to contact me.

Palo Alto definitely works for me

I think Palo Alto still has municipal cable instead of Comcast. BTW, our Comcast carries Countdown live and repeats it later on so, if Palo Alto has Comcast, 6PM for Rachel should be right.

Great Idea JHUC!

I would love to go to a "viewing party" too. Cool_P, let me know if you're going to do something and if you need any help. I'm about 20 miles South of SF and can drive anywhere you need.

Only one thing, why are we asking CP to do this and not one of us?

Thank you Polly :)

I am currently unemployed... err.... between gigs. :) So I have some time to take my sexy behind to PA and look around for a suitable place.... Ironically, I may be starting a new job on the 8th, so I guess it won't be a long first day. LOL!

Since there are 2 train stations in PA, I will also check out the California Ave. scene. It also has a great transit hub there, including train.... and it's MUCH easier to find parking.... heh heh.

Before the show (commuter time)

more trains stop at University Station, after the show trains stop at all stations. Rudy's Pub is the closest "full bar" with a TV to the University station ( http://www.yelp.com/biz/rudys-pub-palo-alto ) but there are many others nearby.

izit a slow news day or what? I hope the evacuation of New Orleans and surrounds goes well...

Cool. Thank you..... but....

The wifey just found out that that same Monday football season starts.... sigh.... I hope this won't get in our Maddowlicious way....

and

my tongue is simply killing me!

I can imagine

Glass shards and pavement would do a number on a tongue.... but my dear, the good news is that the tongue heals incredibly fast and well, so you'll be in fine shape for those lime wedges and tequilas when we get together to watch Rachel's debut! LOL

Today was an important day

I Have A Dream!

"Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity." -Martin Luther King, Jr. :coolmad:

'Landslide' by Stevie Nicks should be played tonight!

Rachel--tell 'em to play it! :-)

songs

How about "Ain't No Stoppin Us Now" by McFadden and Whitehead and "Wake-up Everybody" by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. That would fire the crowd up.

more song ideas...

...they definitely should play the anthem-like (I Believe in a) "Better Way" by Ben Harper.

Or "Believe" by Ozomatli.

Minnesota

Have you talked at all about Al Franken's race in Minnesota - I know I'm too late for today's show, but I never hear him mentioned on AAR.

Protesters

I just heard Rachel mention the protesters behind the MSNBC set. While I couldn't hear all of it, I am confident one of the things they were chanting was "9-11 was an inside job". It was unfortunate that they had to abandon the set. When Rachel and Gregory moved to "higher ground", was when I actually was able to pick up the words. I couldn't really hear anyone else too clearly at that point. Hopefully tonight will go a little more smoothly.

Okay, that's it

Bender's in, I'm out.

Tomorrow.

"If you want a picture of the future of Man, it is a boot in a human face--forever."--George Orwell

Yep - Unfortunately Green 960 Doesn't Tell You It's REALLY

"The David Bender Let's Go To the Phones Show!"

Rachel, please - can you find somebody, anybody else to guest-host for you? David Bender is just like Jonathan Alter - the Original Mister Centrist without a thought that isn't a DLC talking point. For my money, I'd rather have the Repugs and take my despotism straight, rather than watered down with hypocritical cant like the Clintons and Lieberman are so fond of....

Doctor Dark

You know, there was a time when I actually LIKED Alter, but something happened to him during or after his cancer. It sounds horrible, I know, but he was thoughtful and fair before he got ill and once he came back on the scene, he was a different person. Frankly, he seems a lot like Lieberman at this point, and THAT is scary!

Bingo, Polly - About How Alter Sounds Now

Honestly, I didn't know him before - and I didn't know about his cancer, for which I am truly sorry since there are VERY few people I would wish such a disease on, and all of them are Bush Nazis anyway. But yes - Alter does sound a lot like Lieberman now, and if he sounded more thoughtful before that is a tragedy.

BTW - it's "Darke". :)

LOL, OK then may I say

Dear Doctor DarkE,
I used to like Jonathon Allter a few years back. He used to be a regular on Franken's show on AA (on Friday's I think) and he represented the progressive view all during the Impeachment era. He was terrific, I looked forward to hearing his take on all issues of the day, but then he disappeared for a couple of years. All of a sudden he reappeared on Al's show and he made up a song about him and his cancer. I know it sounds sick, but that was kind of the point, it made fun of it all to help make light.

Anyway, he was different when he came back. His opinions began to really make me angry. His attitude was pompous and so darn arrogant that I threw a few shoes at the computer and TV when he was on. (Did terrible things to my wardrobe).

Anyway, something happened during that time it seems...and these days I usually turn OFF the set if I hear he's coming on. Yes, he and Lieberman are a lot alike these days...

What a shame.

Thanks, Polly :)

Clearly I missed Alter back when he was more than a Centrist talking head - b/c I listen to him now, and I wonder WTF is this guy?

Is Rachel really doing the show anymore?

I don't mind David Bender, he's a good guy... BUT, I did pay for a Premium member access for TRMS. Since her gig at MSNBC, she often skips out on her radio show. I don't see how she can continue to do both. Look, Rachel is smart and talented, and I don't blame her for taking the MSNBC offer. But, somewhere along the way, she's got to make a choice on what she wants to do. You can't do each one half-assed. As she gets more famous, her time will become more limited. I'm tired of getting the podcast and then it being a crap-shoot on whether she's on or not.

Sure!

All she needs is a stable of awesome young historians and, okay, poli sci majors, to research and evaluate her news stories in the style and class to which we have grown accustomed. Al Franken had a crack staff of fact checkers from Harvard when writing his books.

good point

Bender's fine for the fill-in, but if it's a regular occurrence we might need something more substantive. Like, um, a computer reading the AP feed . . . ?

ok, full disclosure -- Bender got under my skin with his straight-male-bashing of Edwards. I don't appreciate sexual moralizing from the left.

Good point

I think you have a fair point. Rachel has been missing shows already, so doing a daily show might make things worse.

However, it might make things better. Part of why she misses so much is because her duties at MSNBC have been vauge and unscheduled. Sometimes she's a panlist on Race for the White House, sometimes she's doing a segment on Countdown, sometimes she's hosting Countdown.

Once she gets her own show, the other stuff will stop. No more RftWH, no more Countdown, just her TV show and her radio show. That should allow a much more stable schedule.

Of course, other stuff might come up, like doing commercials or interviews to promote her new show. We'll have to see how disruptive those things are.

One thing they could do to help is to admit that the radio show really starts at seven. People are already used to that because of the RftWH simulcast. Nobody here wants that simulcast to continue if Rachel isn't on the show anymore. Instead of Rachel doing three hours of radio and on hour of TV, she should start her radio show at 7pm and then simulcast her TV show. Easier on Rachel four hours total, more Rachel than we're currently getting, everybody wins.

Is Rachel really doing the show anymore?

Maddow and the MSNBC JAMMMMMM SESSION

OK, for the win...

Rachel totally jamming with Uncle Pat as he wears Stevie Wonder glasses!

Re: MSNBC dance party

To be fair, Rachel *did* say that she "will not dance the way Ellen does." But she didn't say she wouldn't dance at all -- just not like Ellen.

Personally, I think having to chair-dance cramped RM's style.

:cheese:

Interesting

Today I read a post on a Politico blog that referenced McCain's answer to Leno. He said he did not have a house or a table, chair, etc. He did have a home where his wife and children were waiting for him to return and he gave them thanks by leaving them for a rich heiress.

If there is anything that shows the measure of a man's judgement it is the choices that are made during difficult times. The experience that McCain and any other veteran is unimaginable and it is worth giving credit for. I do not understand why the pain and suffering that his family had to endure is not acknowledged by the media. I can imagine that it was difficult for them as well.

In the area of judgement, is it good judgement to abandon the ones who were loyal and stuck by McCain in his worst hours. I guess it is good judgement if you reside in the 10 percent of America who owns that wealth because it shows good business skills. Right?

I do understand why Obama does not go after McCain to bloody him. He is risking his presidency on the chance that Americans are smarter than a smear campaign.

Maybe he is right and maybe he is wrong...we will see in November.

Simply inspirational!

Say Hello to the new President! A real President!

Watched it!

Watched it in a local gay bar with, as it turns out, a fellow PA emigré. EXCELLENT WORK with the keystone-shaped podium! Unmistakable, and it really stood out to the likes of us.

One more comment...

I don't think we have seen this kind of American Family, at this level, since the JFK days. Michelle Obama is absolutely radiant, the girls beautiful and together with Barack they represent the epitome of the American Family!

Pair them with Joe Biden, and his "Family First" beliefs and we arrive at the definition of "Family Values". GOOD FOR AMERICA!

Barack is tough, he is ready, he is real and he will prevail!!

GOP responds to Obama with lies and provocations

It seems that the initial GOP response to Obama's speech is to lie about it.
They don't have anything real to take issue with, so they make up false issues.

It seems that the R's have decided that the only way they can win the debate
is by turning it into a gutter fight, and they are trying to provoke us to verbal
violence by lying about the facts. Once we lose our cool and find ourselves
arguing their false facts, we've lost the chance to have a real discussion about
real issues.

The point of their remarks is to make us question ourselves and the validity
of our message(as any honest person would do). It is a frequently used tool
of scoundrels to use the decency of honest people against them. We need to
recognize this for what it is, and not hesitate call bullshit on these bullshit tactics.

We've got to call them out on this behavior the minute they try to use it. I think that
the phrase "that's a false issue" might become very useful to us in the next weeks.

Let's not let them trick us into wasting our energy by debating their bogus points.
If we keep ourselves informed, we'll be able to easily refute the lies and falseness,
and their provocations will prove themselves toothless.

Just remember: if they had any real points to make, they would be using them.

Let's all try to jump right past these false arguments and workto talk about the
important stuff!

The Republican response

You know what I like in a response to a speech? When it's written after the speech.

Fox News

Yeah I was watching That Greta Van Sustren just to see the stuff they were flinging after the Obama speach (and what a speach it was) and she said "The speach was good but how can we trust him, he has no experience."

I have news for that crazy Fox reporter. If anyone claims to have the "experience" to fix our Country, show them the door. No one has the certified experience to fix the last 8 years. It need new ideas. Which McCain has ZERO.

I am really terrified that this is still a race..........

Bill had a point

I think Bill Clinton actually had the best line I've heard about experience. When Lincoln ran for President, his experience amounted to eight years in the Illinois state congress and two years in the US House of Representatives.

That's pretty damn similar to Obama. Meanwhile, as Obama has said himself, few people had more experience than Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld.

The irony also comes in terms of war

Lincoln headed the Union during a terrible war, and Obama will (hopefully) take us out of a terrible war.

And because of Lincoln's war, Obama can run for president today.....

.... wouldn't it be awesome that Obama's wars may lead in the future to a Muslim-American president? Maybe from Illinois?

Sheesh.... just when I thought that nothing good could come from war.... yet... the definition of "good" and "evil" makes a wonderful topic of conversation.. ;)

McCain is REALLY outdated.

If you check out this link you will see a picture and description for National Security. Problem with the picture is it is of an F-14 a retired old fighter.

Anyway useless but fitting trivia. Can't wait to see your new show !

Gotta Love the "DEMOCRATIC" Republic of the United Amero $tates

Are you just playing dumb, or are you insane? UBL, KSM & Atta defeated all the USA's counter measures under DoD NORAD/NEADS on 9/11 so the USA must redouble PMC contracts with KBR & Blackwater, Boeing, Raytheon et. al., in perpetuity? WTF???

Senator McCain was turning his sights to Iraq just days after 9/11, I stood up and opposed this war, knowing that it would distract us from the real threats we face. When John McCain said we could just "muddle through" in Afghanistan, I argued for more resources and more troops to finish the fight against the terrorists who actually attacked us on 9/11, and made clear that we must take out Osama bin Laden and his lieutenants ...

So what I want to do is draw—I want them out in the same way that we make sure that we draw out our own combat troops.

In the USA, the percentage of those who don't buy the official myth that amateur pilots with boxcutters defeated the DoD's NORAD/NEADS trillion dollar complex of countermeasures to successfully penetrate restricted DC airspace well after attacks on the WTC were public knowledge, exceeds 45%. In NYC the number is over 65% have concluded that the 9/11 attacks involved far more than the government claims to have had occurred just as the global consensus of the official LONE GUNMAN official story surrounding the JFK assassination having been complete bunk. Thus in both cases the perpetrators remain free to commit future acts of terror under FALSE FLAG guise to achieve their political objectives, which incidentally always involve expansion of the MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX that benefits the IRON TRIANGLE with tentacles in every state via the FRB.

Have you been bothered by the fact that the FBI and DoD sill refuse to release the video from additional 84 surveillance cameras trained on the Pentagon at the time of the attack?

How about the fact that live BBC TV News reported that WTC-7 had collapsed 26 minutes prior to the actual event?

The fact that AG Ashcroft was told not to fly commercial aircraft and Willy Brown was personally warned by Condi Rice not to fly on 9/11 hasn't left a burr in your saddle has it?

What about the other 570 570 UNANSWERED questions that the 9/11 widow Jersey Girls who protested for months in the capital to finally have the Kean-Hamilton Commission created against the will of the Whitehouse, that remain UNANSWERED?

Cap'n,

Is this really any better than someone calling another a fag? Whereas I don't have to access this via cell, this type of spamming is obnoxious and simply makes me not to want to read the balance of the thread.

This should be unacceptable to AA and my patience is growing short, but then again I haven't gotten any sleep for 2 weeks now, so maybe that's it?

That said, "fag" is still a pretty blunt slur; and if Singy/Al included something that straightforward in his/her missive, then yeah, he/she should be booted, too. Otherwise, he/she is merely annoying. Very annoying, true, but still.

Tim Polenta??

Tim Polenta??
"Polenta is made with ground yellow or white cornmeal. It can be ground coarsely or finely depending on the region and the texture desired. As it is known today, polenta derives from earlier forms of grain mush commonly eaten in Roman times and after. Early forms of polenta were made with such starches as the grain farro and chestnut flour, both of which are still used in small quantity today. When boiled, polenta has a smooth creamy texture due to the gelatinization of starch in the grain, though it may not be completely homogenous if a coarse grind or a particularly hard grain such as flint corn is used."
Perfect description of McCain's running mate - boiled white gelatinized grain mush.

Obama's speech: GAME ON!

Gloves off. We've got a fighter this time. I'm psyched.

Not Pawlenty, not Romney

MSNBC is reporting that Tim Pawlenty has been told that he isn't the VP pick and Mitt Romney won't be at the even in Ohio.

If the Republican VP pick is Lieberman, I'm reinstating my crackpot theory that McCain is deliberatly trying to lose the election.

Awww, just ignore those idiots!

They are all just PLAYING with us at this point. They are trying to take the attention away from the Obama speech last night and the more we speak about it, the more it takes the attention away from where it should be focused.

Obama was glorious and was the very best political speech I have ever witnessed. I'm still smiling....

At least they didn't leak

At least they didn't leak the VP pick last night, as some reporters expected them to.

It's Sarah Palin.

Okay, no more speculating. They're revealed that it's Sarah Palin, govenor of Alaska.

Who is three years younger than Obama and has only been govenor for two years, thus destroying the experience argument.

Who is a former Miss Alaska runner up, making the "Celebrity" ad instantly ironic.

Who is currently invovled in an inquiry about a possibly inappropriate firing.

Who lives in Alaska and was born in Idaho, states the Republicans were probably going to win anyway.

...

McCain has gone crazy. I just don't understand how he could think she's the right running mate for him.

and...

...why didn't he pick the person who had the second most votes in the primary? Isn't that part of what that commercial McBush put out was about? (Why didn't Obama pick Hillary, when she had the second most votes in the primary?)

The hypocracy is oozing out of the Republican party. Can't wait for four nights of lies next week.

GO DEMS!

Didn't Rachel Talk About Sarah Palin Some Weeks Back?

Make some comment about her being "Alaska's Great Republican Hope" as about the only Alaskan Repug whose hands aren't filthy w/oil company luchre? And then she brought up the firing investigation?

How's that going, BTW?

I wonder if it's a really desperate move on McCain's part as the mainstream DLC is spinning it - or a really smart one, picking a woman with a (generally) clean record to gather the Hillary Harridans....
