Comments from McCain

Rachel, Today, in catching up on my reading, I came across an article discussing a new ad from McCain about the Obama children. Now , I have not seen the ad nor have I heard anyone discuss it. This article is the first I've heard of this. I don't care to see the ad, but think someone should point out how low the road McCain is taking. Anyone who still calls McCain a friend, really has me. scratching my head. I'm sending the link to the article. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/andy-borowitz/new-mccain-ad-attacks-oba_b_... . McCain has shown to me he has no character, which I had already suspected in the first place.

vikkids,

Andy Borowitz is a comedian and the piece to which you are referring is "supposed to be" funny.

Huff Po does a terrible job in combining humorous pieces in with the serious stuff, so considering the political climate these days, it might be easy to confuse the two from time to time..

Polly, you're right that

Polly, you're right that Huffington Post could have been clearer about this being a joke.

One of the unfortunate things about the internet is how easy it is for parody to get misinterpreted. Even articles from The Onion occasionally get forwarded by people who think they're serious. One person forwards it, forgetting to mention that it's a joke, then suddenly it's spreading around the internet by people who haven't checked where it came from.

This article from Huffington Post will probably have an article on snopes.com before too long.

Jason, you know

you are probably right about Snopes and during this HOT campaign season, I'm sure they are more than busy correcting all sorts of smears and parodies.

HuffPo has a special section devoted FOR jokes and such, so when they mix it in within the POLITICS section, it really does leave some things up for debate. What a shame because for the most part, I really like that blog.

Joke

What I can't figure out is how Hillary Clinton can continue to call John McCain, "my friend", after he told that Chelsea joke?

Somebody can insult me directly and I may get over it. BUT, if you bring my children into it, in front of a public audience especially, there's no way that I'd ever call that guy "my friend".

Just can't understand it.

Partly it's diplomacy. She

Partly it's diplomacy. She has to keep working with him in the Senate.

Partly she says he's her friend because it defuses any possible argument that they're being petty. If there was actually a recording of him making that joke, that would be huge. Without that, the people who like McCain will give him the befit of the doubt about whether or not he actually said it, then get mad at anyone who attacks him with it, as if they were making a personal attack on him.

He made it

He apologized for it, so there's no doubt he made it.

NYC TRMS TeeVee Machine premiere viewing par-tay

I am honing in on finalizing a spot for fans to gather in Manhattan (likely in Chelsea) to watch Rachel's premiere on Mon, Sept 8, but I need an approximate head count.

In the past, when I've tried NYC gatherings, we haven't had much of a showing from TRMS fans (although attendance by other parties - guys named "Jeff" and such - has been positively Sacajawean). That being said, there's got to be a bunch of youse out there. Really, don't be shy - we're not scary or weird. Wacky and geeky, yes...

So, please, help me out and give a shout-out if you may be interested. Responding to this message does not commit you to anything ... but will be very helpful to me.

Thanks!

**Then stay tuned to the blog for further details. It's gonna happen.**

Nice One

Wish I could be there ChemGirl but just can't make the trip. Maybe you'll have to add a virtual component to the meetup. Great that you're trying to get this organized.

Thanks Chemgirl, someone had to do it!

Wish I could be there...considering it is the place I still call "home".

(sigh) Perhaps another time?

Hoist a cup o' grog fer me, matey!

I'll be with ye in spirit from 3000 miles west!

if work permits!

Great idea. NYC TRMS TEEVEE Machie premiere

Sounds great! I'd love to attend. Please keep me posted. ...so our minds may meet across these pages, in the colorful country of another writer's language, where we can flourish in the knowledge that we are learning how to speak to one another... S. Brownrigg

Kucinich at the Convention

Has there been any talk of Kucinich's speech Tuesday night? He blew the roof off of the house! Political theater at it's finest.

He was spot on and ripped the current and proposed regimes to shreds. Has anyone else heard any commentary?

Here's the vid on YouTube, in case you missed it.

Title for the TV Show

Ya know, I'm starting to think that the best title for the TV Show
should simply be "Rachel Maddow."

It certainly identifies what is unique and special about the program,
and it's also the way that MSNBC has been promoting it on air.

What is the benefit (or half-life) of a gimmicky title anyway?

Maybe it's best to leave those kind of titles for the various segments
of the show (like "Life During War-Time," etc., so that they identify the
theme of each segment, and don't get worn out from over-use.

of course, another alternative could be:
"This Post Rational World with Rachel Maddow."
(apologies to Tom Tomorrow)

I think the main purpose of

I think the main purpose of a title is advertising. People who've never heard of Keith Olberman would probably just look at his name and see yet another human name. The word 'countdown' is a little intriguing. It's not hugely intriguing, but it's enough to get a few people's attention when they're scrolling through the channel guide.

That's the theory, anyway.

I like "The Maddow Show" because it's punchy and it rhymes.

my thoughts

i need justification on why u obama nutz did not support the ultimate candidate hillary ,she would have gotten the white house back to the dems . instead u guys went nutz for obama , and you guys will see the republicans tear down your suspect obama ,its happening as we type , polls are going to mccain's favor and u guys r going to regret it in nov. when the republicans get 4 more years ,,, PLEASE PLEASE IN 2012 GET BEHIND CLINTON !!!! between obama and mccain, WE are better off with mccain. WHAT A DAMN SHAME !!!

Gee

Wonder who this could be?

Hey, give him credit.

Hey, give him credit. The caps lock is off for most of that post. Baby steps deserve recognition and this is definitely an improvement.

Troll4McShame Must Be Back on His Meds

Congratulations, Troll - you've figured out how to turn off the caps lock, finally, just as Jason points out.

Otherwise - same old tired McShame homophobic racist apologist b.s. ....

??????

I thought they were pretty much the same position wise. The thing that turned me off to Hillary was she would make up stories. I say stories since I don't want to call her a liar.

But if she won the nomination ANYTHING would be better than McCain.

As far as the polls I guess we will have to wait till after the debates to get our first look.

By ANTI OBAMA August 28, 2008 - 5:38pm

Wow, Maddow bloggers. I'm terribly sorry to read this post. On the frontpage threads, our rightwingnuts are at least decent enough to try and mask their concern trolling.

Video tonight?

Vanessa? Tim? Wouldn't want to miss another.

Thanks Rachel!

I want to thank you for airing Brian Schweitzer's speech on yesterday's TRMS. I know you didn't do the deciding, but it seems some of MSNBC's producers have forgotten what they should be covering at the convention. I like to hear opinions on the speeches (especially yours and Gene Robinson's), but I want to hear the speeches and form my own opinion as well.

It's really too bad that MSNBC didn't air Schweitzer's or Tammy Duckworth's speeches. We had to switch to CSPAN to watch a lot of the convention.

Also, as a Denver resident - welcome to Colorado! I hope you're enjoying your time here!

Show Name

It's very exciting that Rachel will have her own show. Congratulations Rachel.

Some names I thought of:

1. Prime Time with Rachel Maddow
2. Prime News with Rachel Maddow

But I do like the Maddow Show.

I hope that some of Barack Obama's speech will articulate the disgust and rage that so many feel towards Bush & Co as well as his plans.

Jennifer Hudson just did a fabulous job with the national anthem.

Pat Buchanan the White Supremacist

Rachel,

Have you ever been given a reason why MSNBC puts a known White Supremacist, Racist and Homophobic person on a national syndicated news show...an on a, consistent basis? Pat Buchanan is known defender of Hitler and Nazis. The company he keeps closely are White Supremacist groups organized by "the not so popular" David Duke and other Militant White Supremacist groups! Rachel have you found out why, MSNBC why they have hired him?

Pat Buchanan, is unfortunately smart and uses it in exceptionally wicked ways. Listen to his references to Barack Obama and 95% of the time he throws in a racial characteristic to describe and reference Barack Obama's every move and he hides it sometimes with a complement. Today, he likend Barach speech to being a Political athlete? He also mentioned it not to be from Ophra Land? Notice the reference each time to his Black side. Pat continues to try to define Obama by his race to play to people who are on the fence because of Race or to bring other over to his "dark side". I guess I don't understand how someone like Buchanan gets a contract on a major station?

Nata, it's simple

...it's because they like him. A yup, he's a horror but he makes nice with people in power and he laughs a lot, so they think he is just swell.

I wish I knew that was all there was to getting on TV, had I know about this when I was younger, I would have been a star!

B/c He's So Far To the Right He Comes Out the Left Sometimes

Not to defend him - but he can, on occasion, provide a useful perspective on the Right's so-called thinking, and he has consistently been strongly critical of the Bushes' imperial ambitions. Also, b/c his worldview is in some ways Libertarian Conservative, he often ends up siding w/the Left on major issues like Government Abuse of Power. Like Olbermann said to him a while back on-air, "As always, Pat, I agree w/about three-fours of what you say - but the rest...?" ::disbelieving headshake::

You're absolutely right about his "code words" referring to Obama's race becoming more blatant, though. Clearly he never thought he was ever going to have to seriously worry about the prospect of a non-White Christian Male President in his lifetime, and its starting to fry his circuits in a BIG way.

Feminist?

Please explain to me why using a person in order to win a race, just because she happens to have a set of boobs, is not sexism? Or objectification of women in general?

Why is a woman a feminist when her pro-life lifestlye has led her to have a 17 yr old daughter with child?

Why is it that the people of the Republican party believe that women all over America will be swayed by this pick, just because she is a woman? She has one thing in common with HRC- she is a woman. Politically, she could not be more opposite. I would have to be a complete idiot to think that this was a great second choice since my candidate (Clinton) was not available to vote for.

Thank you once again, GOP, for letting us all know where you rank women on your list of priorities.

spikeroo2, well

1. This is most definitely Sexism, even misogyny if you ask me.
2. She is not a feminist, she is a dangerous fascist who does not believe in science and believes that Creationism should be taught in schools.
3. The Republicans are delusional about this. They truly have lost all objectivity as evidenced by this pick itself.
4. Did you ever doubt their allegiances?

Achtung

I talked to my red state mom yesterday, and she thinks this Palin woman is the bee's knees. We both ended up going over Palin's Wikipedia page and arguing over the phone. The only thing, the only thing, that made my mom step AWAY from the republican was Palin's anti-abortion stance. Can we emphasize that, please?

Hazzard county had the highest teen pregnancy rate in the country when I was in high school (= Reagan). The first class pregnancy came in seventh grade, an eleven-year-old who was twelve when she had the kid. I remember seeing that kid in its stroller forgotten in the summer sun on sidewalks all through high school. Out of my class of ca. 240 students, 30 girls dropped out because of babies. More girls had babies but managed to graduate. Can't imagine how we're doing now after "don't ask, don't tell," I mean "abstinence education." (Boy, if any phrase describes Hazzard, it's "abstinence education." Especially with the born again tax revolt dude on the school board and now a county commissioner.)

Let's hammer home the fact that this Palin woman is anti-choice.

SNAKE OIL EXPRESS IS AT IT AGAIN

BEWARE OF..... THE SNAKE OIL EXPRESS......!!!!!

We need politicians.....We need politicians like Barack Obama to help remove the automatic association of the word politician to greedy, egotistical, "sneaky", unethical people.
I personally WANT a President who is smarter than me. We have a chance that God has given us at this perfect timing when the newest "wanna be" leader of The Snake Oil Express will "do us in".
Dick Cheney at a recent dinner for Republicans, at his turn at the microphone, said in reference to a geneology search that says he is related to Barack Obama said "Oh well...at least we're not from West Virginia".
We need to get over ANYTHING that will keep us away from the voting booth this November , and vote for Senator Obama. Our country, with someone like John McCain at the helm, will be in so many wars, just to satisfy an egotistical John McCain, who, in my opinion is still fighting old wars.
Recently, in answer to a question from one of his "broken record" town hall meetings, Senator McCain said he did not disagree with reinstating the draft,
I want a President who can think on his feet, and thinks before he commits. John McCain does not have the temperament to run OUR country. He, in my opinion is too trigger happy and will get us into more and more battles that can and should be avoided, while at the same time keeping the United States Proud and safe.
Remember, this is not the traditional GI Joe war, where whoever kills the most people wins.
With Barack Obama as President we WILL stand up as Americans again and hold our heads high.
I so wish it didn't matter, but I am a typical white female, age 50 and born and raised in southern West Virginia. So...John McCain, don't count your typical old white people before we vote!
I have worked hard all my life, but became disabled 4+ years ago. I live on $637,00 a month, and I am thankful for that. So John McCain, when you say a person is not rich unless he or she has five million dollars $5.000.000.00) or more, that tells us for what you aim.
Barack Obama is committed to changing the political process by building an administration founded on a base of support from ordinary Americans. His administration will be about putting the people's interests ahead of the special interests.

swoosh

Rachel, in my opinion you overuse your favorite sound effect, the SWOOSH. It would be more effective as an occasional spicy seasoning rather than a folowup to almost each of your comments. I love your show, but find the constant "swoosh" to be annoying. I also believe you should have scolded your assistant during a break rather than on-air.

I like it. It seperates the stories cleanly.

Antivirus protection for AAR fans

Hey all,

Due to the high volume of comments recently (smiley face), I'm doing something I don't normally approve of and cross-posting, because I think this is important. You're probably running Norton (= Symantec) or McAfee antivirus programs. They're not very good. I just had some issues that neither Norton nor McAfee nor Spybot Search & Destroy found or fixed, but a new, highly rated free software available from Cnet did find and fix. In the interest of reducing our vulnerability to mean-spirited Republican IT attacks--and remember, they can afford to hire Chinese hackers--here's a link to some good (free) antiviral protection.

(You want the new version, 4.8, which got 4 + 5-star reviews, not 4.7 which garnered fewer stars.) When you register the software, they'll send you a free password to use the full version.

This program can scan your computer before Windows starts, as well as handle malware.

On The T.V. Machine With Rachel Maddow

Please Please Please find some creative use for this gem of a video for the opening of your t.v. show:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYymnxoQnf8

Gore Vidal tells Buckley to "Shut up a minute" and calls him a "Crypto-Nazi." Buckley retaliates by calling Gore a "Queer" and threatens that if he doesn't stop calling him a Crypto-Nazi he's going to sock him in the "Goddamn Face" where he'll "Stay plastered!" It's great stuff!

Also, there's this woman who's doing an experiment that she calls "Living Oprah." This woman has to spend an entire year of her life following all of Oprah's advice and she blogs about it daily. You can find out more about the project at her website http://www.livingoprah.com/ ...So here's what that has to do with the t.v machine... I think it would be a great idea to have a segment on your show where the most hardcore conservative has to listen and watch your shows every single day AND has to actually read the research that your information is based on. I think it would be interesting to see if an extremely opinionated conservative can be reasoned with.

Republican Convention

Since nearly everything in this convention is trying to convince the public that McCain/Palin are not really Republicans (the ones that have botched the management of this country for eight years), why don't they cut to the chase and tell people to vote for people that are NOT Republicans?
