Guest Host: Maddow and Reagan Today
Tonight on the Rachel Maddow and Ron Reagan Radio Programs....
Rachel and Ron are off on the Air America Cruise, and I'm thrilled to have the honor of filling in for them for the next few days.
By way of introduction, my name is Nicole Sandler, and I'm broadcasting this week from Miami, FL. I've actually been in radio for close to 30 years, but most of those years were spent playing music. Listeners in Los Angeles might remember me from my days with Mark & Brian at KLOS, or from the "Triple A" stations KSCA and Channel 103.1.
After losing a couple of jobs due to stations being sold and changing formats, I moved around the country a bit, and wound up back in South Florida, where I grew up, for family reasons. I started a video production company, but spent much of my time listening to the Air America affiliate down here, and soon contacted them for employment.
To make a long story short, I wound up hosting mornings on 940 WINZ until, along with much of the radio industry, I was downsized. I now podcast and blog daily at www.RadioOrNot.com, and this week am honored to fill in for Rachel and Ron Reagan while they're cruising.
Tonight, we'll deal with the passage of constitutional amendments in California, Florida and Arizona that outlaw gay marriage... and more. We'll look at the effect of the legislation, how this happened in a supposed enlightened time in American history, and what we can do to counter it.
I'll be joined by Melissa Etheridge, activist/artist Charles Merrill, TV's Judge David Young, adoption professional and gay foster parent Robert Lamarche, and you on the phones at 866-303-2270.
You can always reach me at www.radioornot.com, or nicole@nicolesandler.com.
Looking forward to talking with you tonight! And stick around for the third hour for The Ron Reagan Show!

Welcome Nicole
Although we'll miss Rachel, she needs a break after the last three months. You will get a fair shake here and it sounds like you have some interesting guests. Good luck on AAR tonight!

I hope they give Nicole her own show. She is great. I miss listening to her in South Florida and think she would be a great addition.

This isn't getting off to a very good start...
Maybe the Florida Republican Party sent Nicole a robocall, telling her taping didn't begin until tomorrow.

By dschermNovember 17, 2008 - 6:19pmWhy is it ...
... that I need Rachel's absence to remind me how good she is? I've come to expect (and take for granted) a certain level of excellence, and when the teacher is out, well, the substitute just isn't the same -- on radio or TV.
Here's hoping RM and SM are getting at least a little bit of downtime on that cruise--

Lieberman gets to keep his Homeland Security chairmanship. Vote: 42-13.

By chemgirlNovember 18, 2008 - 12:51pmYou may recall...
...that I have pledged to keep all criticism of the Obama Administration in its first six months to a minimum, barring anything truly and murderously outrageous. This is a personal courtesy I extend even to obvious boneheads like Bush 2.0.
It does NOT, however, preclude my pointing out some interesting items, such as this:
"Obama advisers: No charges likely vs interrogators"

Remember listening to the Dems in 2006 when they said "No impeachment is possible until we win control of the Congress"--only to have Speaker of the House Pelosi tell us (after the elections, of course) that "impeachment is off the table"?

We haven't seen so many spineless politicos since the last Gumby convention. And they just don't go away . . .

Right on, chemgirl. I am here weeping tears of rage and frustration. OTOH, Lieberman is an expert at betrayal, so maybe it's only right the whiny SOB stays with Homeland Security.

Is it true that as chair of Homeland Security Lieberman is responsible for investigating the Executive Branch? Is this serious power?
The carrot-and-stick approach for letting Lieberman continue in his chairpersonships: he's a suckup to power and would clearly be charmed by the chance to ride the new wave, and if he screws up his posts can be stripped from him one at a time.

Thanks for sitting in, and greetings to Coral Gables :)
My sib got a couple graduate degrees in Miami. Lovely place to visit. Hope it doesn't drown like Venice.
Any chance you could interview author Michael Gruber?

I don't have enough information to seriously believe that either Hilary Clinton or John Kerry will be offered the secretary of state job. Each had terrible foreign policy. If you were going to retrain a Dem in Obama statecraft, it would make sense to choose someone fresh, or Bill Richardson, who armed with this on their résumé could go on to make a credible run for president in the coming decades.

I'm with the Capn on giving Obama a slight vacation from criticism, however my tongue is incredibly swollen after having bitten it so many times. I don't understand Obama's choices (from keeping Lieberman to his choice for Secretary of State) but I do know that he is one heck of a brilliant man and will "trust" him on these choices even if it means my tongue and lips become black and blue.
...at least for the moment...

By Polly TicsNovember 18, 2008 - 6:27pmObama has rare excellence.
He also must have an especially good understanding of how the Senate currently works.
Just heard Jonathan Alter on Countdown saying that removing Clinton from her Senate role might help Obama. Alter said she has an "independent power base" there.

By Buxtehude_BarbarossaNovember 18, 2008 - 6:49pmre: Obama
Obama is a very smart man and he has shown that he thinks long-term. On one hand, I really trust that he's thought these things through and is many steps ahead on the calculation of who to put where to best get things done. On the other hand, I fear that the political rivals around him will use their power against him, not for him. All the happy talk of unity and working together aside, they are still a bunch of very ambitious politicians.
I realize I should be patient and trust the guy I voted for, but I'm already worried that this isn't going to work. Somebody talk me down.

By NJSharonNovember 18, 2008 - 10:28pmMy information is so woefully inadequate
My information is so woefully inadequate, it's like I'm a fifth-grader talking about these issues. So it's not like I could possibly be tipping Obama's hand, about anything. But it seems to me that he's dangling the prospect of jobs and influence in front of these people, in ways that would instantly whet their appetites, appeal to their strongest instincts, cause them to put their best foot forward.

By Buxtehude_BarbarossaNovember 18, 2008 - 11:15pmVetting Hillary Clinton
Isn't it exciting, how the idea of vetting Hillary Clinton for a Cabinet position might help keep Bill Clinton honest about his post-Presidential financial dealings? Might give Hillary Clinton a reason to use all her brains rather than triangulate away from the truth? One reason Hillary seemed to hang on so long in the primary was all the world attention she got every minute of every day. Priceless self-advertisement, a once-in-a-lifetime chance to cement your place in history that would pay for itself a thousand times over and would have to create enough fame to last you for the rest of your life. Secretary of state would give her more of that kind of international attention. That being said, I still can't believe she's going to get the post. *Sticks neck out*
One of the nicest lawyers I ever met, at a B&B in Humboldt county, was an immigration attorney who went to law school with Hillary Clinton and had only wonderful things to say about her.
