A Message for Senator John McCain
Watch: An Idea whose time has come
An Invitation to Senator John McCain
….an opportunity you may never have considered - historic and unprecedented.
Senator McCain, this is a personal message to you - every word of it sincere. It will take just five minutes of your time.
You know that there are very few people in government today that the American people respect. Approval ratings on every level speak for them. You are respected, and undeniably a war hero – and that you’ve been reduced to a bumbling fool by your own people, must have you outraged. Perhaps you will be ready for what I will ask of you.
You said nothing to George Stephanopolous that was anything but completely honest. We’re broke. Historically broke. We’ll be climbing out of this hole for decades, and we remember “read my lips - no new taxes”.
Your campaign is in desperation phase and it’s sad. Your people can’t share the excitement that Americans should feel, as they watch 200,000 Germans cheer the first authentic American President in a very long time. Republicans of conscience being considered as Obama running mates, is nothing more than empirical proof that something radically different is happening.
Now, you have an opportunity that you may never have considered - historic and unprecedented.
Drop out of the race. Do not concede. Reject. Reject the ugliness of campaign, all of those that have come before, all those to come. Drop out, not for health reasons, or some other managed spin. Fire the sociopaths that work for you. Reject their slanderous and divisive and outright silly campaign. Turn your back on them.
Not because you have already lost this election. Those that have underestimated you have paid the price. Not because you’re not many times the man that George Bush is - you are. But because you could be standing in the way of something no one could have envisioned. Not the election of Barack Obama, but acceptance of what he represents. Not only change, but hope.
And as far as the race card, tell your strategists this -we know who Barack Obama is. He is black, and white, and every color of the rainbow. What they do not realize, is that he is no color at all. And again the signature on this is not yours. A united America is what you suffered for, almost gave your life for.
I’m doing this, because of what I know about you. You are your own man. They call your uniquely independent thinking “maverick”.
We’re not seeing John McCain now, it is evident. You can’t be on your guard all the time. Every once in a while the truth slips out.
I’m sure some Democrats will be angry because I speak the truth about you. Its just not done. But they are as irrelevant as the rest of party politics. That could be changing, and you could be an agent of change. Do this, and you will be remembered as a true America hero.
There is no lack of confidence in the outcome of this election. We just don’t have the time. The system is crumbling daily, and enormous systemic problems are met with duct tape. Those solutions are over. There is no time to waste, and these could be a precious four months.
We have something compelling going on, something no less than a Tipping Point. Voter apathy is non-existent- we see Obama volunteers everywhere. Massive resources just keep coming- and from the everyman - $68 dollars at a time.
So, for those who may have already decided that this is just a lunatic rant, consider the history of commonly held beliefs. We now know that the Earth is not flat – and that its not the center of the Universe. If I’d have predicted the emergence of Barack Obama, I’d have been ridiculed. You can do this.
Everyone that I’ve spoken to about this, has had exactly the same reaction. Exactly the same words. He’ll never do this. And yet I have never had a doubt of this.
In the event you have epiphany, ththat since the media turns everyone into dancing bears, as they have you, I will grant no interviews, and debate the merits with no one. This is the beginning and end of it for me. The rest is up to you.
I offer to write a message for you in announcing this decision – a message for all time. Not a condemnation of you, nor of the Republican Party, simply the rejection of a flawed system. You would go from humiliated to historic.
With or without your help, we are a giant step closer to the real American Dream. You can ensure this miracle – that more than two centuries since the American Revolution, we see the beginning of The American Evolution.

An Idea whose time has come . .
Meaningless egotistical bullshit. I'm sure McCanin and his handlers have read this and are trembling in their boots.
I have not been an Obama supporter but will vote for him only because I'm a lifelong Democrat and because there is no viable option (McCain, Barr, staying home, etc.) He has turned his back on Progressive values, has betrayed his supporters and has, despicably, voted for the FISA bill, among other things.
Just because a bunch of college students (who, in the end, will probably not even vote -- they rarely do) are screaming loudly, I don't believe for a minute that an Obama win is a given (although that would certainly be preferable to a Republican win).

Grammy you watch your mouth, now. Its bad kharma. (I'm sure you'll love that).
I think I get the egotistical B.S. comment. You mean where do I come off representing the American people? Thats a completely understandable reaction, shared by many. I'm not a recognizable political expert. As a matter of fact, I don't really connect with alot of what I consider political garbage. You could put what I know about politics in a thimble and have plenty of room. I believe its an advantage. I believe it allows me to experience whats real.
About the ego part, at this point I'm not understood by my wife, my staff, or the rest of my family. I sleep 20 hours a week on average. I live in my office. Yes, really. I don't care about things I used to obsess about, like food. When I feel like I'm going to pass out, I wait, and it goes away. Yes, (in unison) its not good for me. I have no choice.
You'll love this, Grammy.
I'm not sure that you believe thats there's a power greater than you or I, but its kicking butt for me right now, and it also doesn't really care what you think.
In lieu of meaningless rhetoric, I see heart, and I connect with people. In Obama I see an authentic man, and thats why he did well overseas. He makes people comfortable, he's not a threat. Yes, there's a cynical, sceptical alternative to every point I've made.
But I am worried. Not about the election. I believe Obama will win. Its our expectations that we have to manage. This hole is deep.
So Grammy, you have to trust me. Partly because I believe that until we have a country that repects its old folks, we're not where we should be.
About Obama, remember that its progress not perfection... when you shoot too far to the left or the right, you usually miss the target. Also remember who he's following, and be grateful. He's more likely to make sure you're taken care of.
The hard thing to do is to be positive... although some callers were encouraged, even emotional, not one thought it could happen. I see it, because I can see McCain, not this dancing bear they've created. I know he'd love to stick it to them for all the years they tore him up, and for what they're doing to him now.
I believe. You can, too Grammy.

While I applaud your plea to McCain to give up the ugly political tactics he has begun, it's not consistent with democracy that one candidate should step aside to facilitate the coronation of another. While I want Obama to be President, and believe he will to do positive things nationally and internationally as President, even I want a real election to provide him - and the country - with that opportunity.
McCain is only part of the problem here. The other part is our media and the way they have somehow moved from reporting the campaigns to trying to make themselves the determining factor. They are incessantly meddling, manipulating, maneuvering and making a mockery of democracy in America. I don't think they even have that much of a bias towards one candidate or another. What they have a bias towards is flexing their muscles one way or another and seeing the polling sway between candidates as they blow their favors or condemnations one direction or another. God help whoever is ahead in this race in October. Mainstream media will see it as their job to make sure an upset takes place, and the other candidate wins. I am so disgusted with them, and with the way the American electorate never gets that they are being manipulated morning to night.

i am totally with you on this. i don't belive for one moment the "polls". i think the "media" is dealing in fraud. they are scared s**tless about the possiblity of an obama win, and are attempting to say he is not that far ahead. macain gets 100 screened people in a room, that's amazing. obama gets 75,000 at an outdoor thing in a state, they freakout.
how many people did old man macain get to welcome him in columbia? we know the canada thing was a closed funraisier.
i'm saving my pennies now. i have been to germany, but not berlin. i am going to say thank you. 250,000 folks wishing us well is beautiful!!!

Boy.. sometimes its the one word. I can feel you patting me on the head.
First, does Democracy work? I wasn't suggesting they were going to fold up tent. This was about McCain. I believe under the right circumstances he'd want to. For some of the very reasons I stated, he's pissed and I can feel it.
I'd agree with you if we had real elections. These are morons on TV, and McCain's campaign should be dragged out and shot. This is our country we're talking about, and they treat it like its sweeps week.
Let them roll out someone half the man McCain is. We'll embarrass, and, on some John McCain will know they got what they deserved.
Besides, with addition of the Lord of Darkness, Karl Rove, its the perfect time for the McCain mutiny.
Tell me I'm wrong.

That struck a tear..good stuff!
Now @ grammy...I know you may be cynical..but trust me this..YOUNG VOTERS will go to the polls in DROVES! I dont know how many young people you know that you can base your judgement upon. Barack Obama's campaign is full of dedicated young people, in every state, working their asses off to see he wins. Young people will be voting this fall. Dont knock em!

Thank you for your confidence.
Yes, we WILL be at the polls in force, & I personally have been canvassing/phone-banking my ass off. I wouldn't put too much stock in the "likely voter" polls.

from your lips to GOD'S ear. i am rather enjoying the "down in flames" thing with mccain. win by any means is not the way now. gramps and daddy must be spinning. "boy just can't do anything right AGAIN!!!"
now grammy just let me say this. they can steal a 1000 votes in any given area. there will be millions this time. i have been busting my butt since january for this man. i have baked, walked, volunteered, taken days off to travel, knocked on doors, stood in heat, and rain. i am not the only one.
problem is mccain thinks he's right. the right is looking at a gravy train that is about to stop. they are trying to bleed the last from the public purse. i purchased nothing really for food and the price was $50. i refuse to belive that people, this time, will vote against their best intrests.
what are folks afraid of? sunday will be mandated fried chicken night? our country is officially in the crapper. let's give the brother a play! vote obama! save yourself! save us!

By dihi548August 4, 2008 - 2:24amI share many of Marc's sentiments but
in the end, it is over-the-top silly. And I would suggest egotistical bullshit is not far off the mark in many respects.
First McCain doesn't need to drop out. He just needs a time machine to return him to 2000 when he was a maverick because he didn't drink the neo-con kool-aid and run a decent campaign based on non-failed ideas presented honestly. Now I know that is way unlikely, but I submit it is as least as likely as McCain quitting and it would also represent a more constructive change in politics than a Presidential candidate throwing in the towel prior to an election.
"Everyone that I’ve spoken to about this, has had exactly the same reaction. Exactly the same words. He’ll never do this. And yet I have never had a doubt of this."
This very much resembles egotistical bullshit. It might be considered a form of delusion brought on by a lack of rest if not for the offer to write a message for McCain announcing his decision – "a message for all time."
"Not a condemnation of McCain"
I don't think McCain the man needs to be condemned per se but many of his policies do.
"Nor of the Republican Party"
I might just consider voting for John McCain if he kept running and condemned the Republican party. But since he's now embraced the stupidest of Republican policies (i.e., policies he previously rejected), it is an outcome I serious doubt will occur.
"simply the rejection of a flawed system."
I'm with you. Fire the Rove JV. Actually reform campaign finance. Pursue policy questions earnestly, not ideologically. That would be my prayer. Sadly, it is not my expectation.
"You would go from humiliated to historic"
Try humiliated and historic.

By Dr_BillionaireAugust 4, 2008 - 1:42pmSo Tragic
If only our listener responses reflected the attitudes of our candidate of choice. Our candidate takes the high road. Many of us obviously haven't learned anything from him.
First of all, these emails reflect a belief that John McCain designs his campaign strategy. The Stephanopolous interview should tell you something. It is anything but the truth. When did anybody ever run anything when Karl Rove was around? Its a desperation strategy, in his mold.
About the egotistical bull......it shows that many don't understand my view or my approach. I believe he's ready to do this, and it has nothing to do with my ego.
In general, let me say this... people write things in emails that they would never say to your face. Its not a good idea. You are what you write, and what goes around comes around.

By Marc SussmanAugust 9, 2008 - 7:27pmSo tragic
Let's not conflate.
- A 'letter for the ages' is egotistical bull.
- Thinking McCain is going to drop out is delusional. That's independent of a belief your plea might push him over the edge. That part is just egotistical bull.
- A wish that John McCain would find his integrity, drop the Rove and pick up the truth is a hopeful fantasy I'll share with you. However, it is not an expectation for me.
- I'm a prick. I'd say all of this to your face. That said, I do post (vs. email) many other things I would not say publically.
'Tragic' - November will bring reality to your dramatic beliefs.

By Dr_BillionaireAugust 10, 2008 - 10:41amMcCain
If the objective for this silly post was to garner comments, then it was successful. Too bad this is the rhetoric that comes from the left during every presidential election, and usually is part of the reason that Democrats have lost so many presidential races during the past 40 years.
The American public does not like to elect extremists on the right or on the left. The candidate that is perceived as the most mainstream wins. When we take away all of the rhetoric and name calling, as well as Obama pulling out the race card like his campaign did with Hillary Clinton, the one thing that shows through is that McCain is more centrist than Obama. This is the most liberal candidate since McGovern, and unless the move on.org folks and their allies allow Obama to move towards the center and come up with policies on defense, taxes, and energy that most of the American public can support, he will become the latest in the long line of Democratic runner ups in the general election.
McCain has not been afraid to speak his mind and propose legislation that is controversial. Obama has been in the senate for a handful of years and taken no major positions. The only thing he appears to have done is run for president during his senate tenure. He speaks well, but I think McCain is the better leader, and will win this election.

"I’m sure some Democrats will be angry because I speak the truth about you. Its just not done. But they are as irrelevant as the rest of party politics".
The above quote is yours, and I feel it is aimed directly at people like me. Bill Clinton said it best :
"When people are insecure, they'd rather have somebody who is strong and wrong than someone who's weak and right,"
Marc, you give McCain too much credit.
He made a bargain with the devil the day he kissed Fallwell's ring,
He is not an honorable man, and he knows exactly what his advisors are doing - "swiftboating" Obama's character.
Don't accommodate these people. Or appeal to their "honor". Fight back.
Stand your ground.
Anyone who's paid attention to politics in the last 30 years knows bi-partisanship is a joke.
The '06 election was a mandate for reform government and the wishy-washy Democratic leadership blew it. Made fun of calls for impeachment and marginalized people who were fighting for the restoration of the rule of law and our constitutional rights.
I think the Democratic party has lost it's will to lead.
With all social and economic indicators in the tank right now, how could this race be so close?
Think about what Clinton said.
