Back Off John Edwards!
Listen: "Bush's Brain"
We need to discredit our political leaders. It is an indictment of our misguided society.
A ratings hungry media represents the public’s “right to know”, when that is hardly its objective. Human decency - nowhere to be found. We’re experts in righteous indignation. I’m sure some responses to this blog will reflect.
This year, there have been names added to the list of those forever branded sleaze.
Elliot Spitzer, John Edwards. Spitzer’s callgirl, the financial details of his sexual exploits, was newscopy for months. Spitzer’s real problem was that he got too many noses out of joint. A tough character.
Teary-eyed press conferences with dutiful spouses were tragic.
Elliot Spitzer may be a man in need of a recovery program. It doesn’t appear to be an indiscretion. Should that be true, he would hardly be unique. Bill Clinton’s history is even clearer. Let me tell you, you have friends and family that don’t want to be held to this standard.
Now we have John Edwards. His wife, stricken with cancer, stands up for him. Now this.
The public service records of these men will take a back seat, but not for me. That Elliot Spitzer was a tough SOB was a real benefit when he was Attorney General of New York. He did more to clean up the securities industry than anyone of memory.
On the first incarnation of the Air America Cruise, one of the questions asked of the audience, was how many had originally been John Edwards supporters. Almost unanimous response. I wonder how many hands would go up now. His ideas were adopted by both Hillary and Barack Obama.
I’m sure you remember Jimmy Carter’s “lust in my heart” comment. His crime was that he told the truth. A lust-free male is a rare commodity. If you fit that description, then you know women assume an ulterior motive when you talk to them. They have good reason.
Recovery is an anonymous program because of the unfortunate judgements we make of others. I know many good people that had bad obsessions that they were powerless to control.
An addiction by definition is a behavior that you are powerless to control, and has made your life unmanageable. If you look around you, and you understand the dysfunction on so many levels in our financial lives, you will understand why the the program I'm developing is called America in Recovery.
There are addicts in recovery that are now our spiritual leaders. I can tell you that there is nowhere that you will find more courage and service, more stories of redemption, than in the world of 12 step programs. It is a place of miracle and transformation.
It just doesn’t make good copy.

Lay off?
Oh, Mr. Sussman,
I don't feel that personal matters should be grounds for political fodder either. John Edwards family is going through hardships right now that I can't possibly imagine, and that is sad. However, that being said, if a politician takes a stance, and exudes an image of an individual with high moral standards and a devote christian, he (or she) should probably practice what they preach. John Edwards made comments about Bill Clinton's "disgracing the office of the President" with his actions. Being from the south, the "bible belt", John Edwards chose to run on platforms of "Christian" ideals, so really he put himself in the spot he is in. I can honestly say this is much worse than what Clinton did, because, really, we all knew about Clinton, and knew that he was prone to some tomfoolery, whereas someone like Edwards is expected to be held at a higher standard, because he believes society should be held to the same standard.

By pmedwardsAugust 10, 2008 - 5:55amA thoughtful response
You make some excellent points. But Its just as wrong for John Edwards to judge Bill Clinton as it is for us to judge him. Its also wrong to run on a moral platform. The point is that Bill Clinton's indiscretions, and those of all these others, had nothing to do with their performance. Spitzer, Edwards, Clinton- they all accomplished a great deal, and they all made mistakes. I never knew that infidelity is an impeachable offense. They all should have been outed, but not to us. They hurt their families. Those are the ones that should have been defended..
The stories of JFK, Eleanor Roosevelt and so much more... would have been so damaging if it hit the media as it does today.
There are some things that are just none of our business.

If you read Elizabeth Edwards comments and the response on Daily Kos, you'll get a sense of what I believe in, and what you've expressed as well. John still has alot to learn.... humility.

By Marc SussmanAugust 10, 2008 - 6:32amI could care less about his affair
but i am angry at the irresponsibility of his running for president knowing this story was out there.. If he had gotten the nomination only to have this story break in September he would have handed John McCain the presidency, gift wrapped. He could have come clean a year ago and the public would likely be over it by now.

No kidding, that would have been disasterous for the Democratic Party if he were the nominee. Again, though, I think John Edwards could not have survived this because he was so outspoken about the subject when others were in the position he is in now.
I had actually been hearing about this from some of my conservative friends for a week or so now. Apparently the "Drudge Report" and Rush Limbaugh have been putting the pressure on mainstream media to pick this story up, which in turn forced Mr. Edwards to out himself before someone did it for him.
I feel it is an extra low blow from the right simply due to the fact that they had nothing to gain politically from this story, just ruining a man who made a mistake that many have made before and will again.
It is a dirty system we have developed, and it probably has stopped some would be great leaders from taking the big step forward.

"I feel it is an extra low blow from the right simply due to the fact that they had nothing to gain politically from this story, just ruining a man who made a mistake that many have made before and will again."
Edwards has been and could have been a forceful advocate for key progressive causes. This may well 'take him out of the game', so to speak.
Can he no longer be a Cabinet member?

I was wondering how the right wing media would play this out and would manage to pin this on Obama. Then "its-so-over" made a little comment in one of his posts that this showed that Obama didn't have good judgment because he was considering Edwards for a VP position. Since I don't listen much to the corporate media, and much less the raging right side of it, I don't know if that's the way they're trying to pin this one on Obama. If so, I suppose that means all Republicans have poor judgment because they are considering McCain for a presidential position, and he did the same thing that Edwards did.

and those that don't pay much attention may believe it, but the fact is, we don't know WHO is on the short list (or even the long one). So they are speculating that he is on it and then slamming Obama without knowing the truth. SOP!

"Elliot Spitzer, John Edwards. Spitzer’s callgirl, the financial details of his sexual exploits, was newscopy for months. Spitzer’s real problem was that he got too many noses out of joint."
Absolute fucking crap. He sent people to jail for this. He is a fucking multi-millionaire. Get on a plane and fly to Vegas or Europe. I don't care if you cheat on your wife but please don't lie to the public about it. Just refuse to answer questions. And if you haven't put others in jail, I don't care if you hire a prostitute. Unfortunately, I think Elliot needs to go to jail. It's too bad. He did a spectacular job as AG. I was tremendously disappointed.
“On the first incarnation of the Air America Cruise, one of the questions asked of the audience, was how many had originally been John Edwards supporters. Almost unanimous response. I wonder how many hands would go up now. His ideas were adopted by both Hillary and Barack Obama.”
‘Almost unanimous sounds’ rather dubious and I find your speculation about others potentially dishonest responses to a regarding their support of Edwards a little ironic.
Btw, a 12 step program focused on eliminating a compulsive desire for exceptionally hot twenty year olds does sound like a place of miracle and transformation and it does should like it would make good copy.

Dr_Billionaire,
Maybe saying Edwards is ruined is a little harsh, I mean, Bill CLinton has been invited to speak at this years convention. I do believe that Edwards will be unable to campaign for Obama, and Barack will have to keep his distance for the next couple of months, but I don't think a cabinet position is completely out of the question.

By pmedwardsAugust 10, 2008 - 1:22pmQuasimodo?
Fox news can't help but running this and I don't understand why. First, everyone's favorite tranny, Ann Coulter said John was a "fag". Well, I guess a mistress shoots holes in that theory. But since Ann's "fiancee" left her at the alter, there is still plenty of "speculation" about the true nature of Ann's "naughty bits", whether they are kibbles or milk bone.
Second, this opens John McCain's rather "sordid" past to close inspection. Cheating on a wife who had been disfigured in a car accident (true, not a disease, there is much less "sympathy" in an accident). Also, the mistress was 24 and a multi millionaire, which sort of mitigates the circumstances. It's difficult to hold it against a man when the mistress is both "young" and "rich". It seems somehow less "dirty". The only minus is that they married only a month after the divorce from "Quasimodo" became final. I guess that makes everything OK and "moral" according to how Republicans see "morals".

By deanrddAugust 10, 2008 - 5:22pmSo....does this change how hw feels about the "Working Class"?
Does this make his views on the subject any less credible?
I, too, feel somewhat betrayed by the dishonesty of how he handled the facts of this affair. At least he didn't go down denying it, but that doesn't help much, does it? I am relieved that he didn't become the nominee, but I would like to believe that if he had, he'd have come clean a lot sooner, given that his wife already knew about it....and this would've been put behind us already.
After all, John McSame isn't being seen throwing too many rocks over this, is he? Nor his surrogates.
Infidility is a sticky subject. Particularly with politicians. We hold them to a higher standard.

Considering that John McCain graduated from the Navel Academy 5th from the bottom out of 899 Cadets AND he walked around a Baghdad market in a "flak" jacket using 150 of our soldiers as "human shields" and putting them in grave danger for a "photo op", it's obvious that we may hold other politicians to a different standard, but John McCain we hold to a standard all his own.
The press has as much concern for our soldiers as John McCain does.
So continues the press's love affair with John McCain.

I certainly don't think he is out of the game as far as social contributions go. But I do think it is the kind of thing that could keep him out of the cabinet, at least this time around.
He might have to be content to just be Obama's Tsar of Socialism - an unofficial position.

Tsar of socialism??? Gee, you must really hate the once-great middle class to make a statement like that.
Like it or not, the reality of the situation is that we are under attack from the corporatist right. For some reason, they don't mind that Reaganomics has all but completely destroyed the middle class. That we have spent more on corporate welfare and the military industrial complex, and less and less on our crumbling infrastructure. That the agencies that protect our food, water, and air quality have become more and more stretched due to budget cuts to pay for corporate welfare and payments to private (military) contractors who are allowed to run amok and rip off the taxpayers by not satisfying their contracts.
These are just a few things that bother me about the way our country has been run for the past 30 years.....but then, I never was a big fan of fascism.

Don’t take my 'Tsar of Socialism' comment too seriously but do listen for it on right wing radio show in your area.
It is not that they want to destroy the middle class but destroying the middle class is just a necessary part of liberating the upper 1%. It’s like the birthing pains of a nation.

exactly. A population capable of buying their product is necessary to them, they just don't care if it is here or in India or China and the more dispersed, disorganized and desperate, the better.

By roadgoddessAugust 12, 2008 - 10:38pmEdwards is no more ruined
Edwards is no more ruined than ...
1) Republican David Vitter, who had multiple visits to many different prostitutes in Washington DC and in New Orleans
2) Republican Larry Craig, who was caught soliciting gay sex with a man in the public bathroom of a Minneapolis airport by an airport security officer trained to look for such incidents
3) Republican Newt Gingrich, who divorced his wife while she was in the hospital with a terminal disease, deciding instead to marry the secretary he was fooling around with for months
4) Republican Rush Limbaugh, who was busted for attempting to purchase 1,000 plus illegal pills through his house maid, AND ALSO for having viagra with him when he went on a trip to Santo Domingo, a known haven for child prostitution
5) Nazi Republican Michael Savage, whose comments to multiple callers and the audience in general border on the psychopathic, and customarily solicitatious of violence against his perceived political opposition
6) Republican Richard Nixon, who was guilty of massive corruption and disregard for the constitution, but still managed to be seen as a venerable old statesmen when the corporate media resurrected his career in the 1980's
7) Republican George W. Bush, whose flagrant cocaine abuse and massive philandering over 20 years was forgiven just because he was planted as one of several Texas Ranger investors and pushed into the Texas Governorship. His father even invaded Panama and captured Manuel Noriega when Noriega threatened to release documentary evidence of his Dubya Bushes escapades.
